Block Captain Success Story: Patio Homes Takes Action

On September 4, 2025, a fire came dangerously close to the Leyden Rock Patio Homes neighborhood. Some residents evacuated; others prepared to leave. Arvada Fire responded quickly and contained it before any homes were damaged — but for many residents, it was a wake-up call.

Rather than wait for someone else to act, Patio Homes residents organized. With HOA support, neighbors became block captains for each street and built a simple safety network.

So far, the Patio Homes block captains have:

  • Delivered GO Bags and preparedness flyers to all 44 homes

  • Created neighborhood text groups for quick communication

  • Conducted a neighborhood walk with Arvada Fire

  • Organized a neighborhood briefing with Arvada Fire for August 22

You don't need to be an expert to be a Block Captain—just someone willing to share information, encourage preparedness, and connect neighbors. The Patio Homes success story shows that when neighbors take a few simple steps together, they can make a meaningful difference in the safety, resilience, and connectedness of their community.

Prepared Neighborhoods Start with Connected Neighbors

One Leyden neighborhood is showing that emergency preparedness starts with something simple: neighbors knowing and helping one another.

Rather than waiting for an emergency, residents created a neighborhood text group to share Red Flag Warnings, weather alerts, safety updates, and other preparedness information. Along the way, the group has also become a way for neighbors to ask for recommendations, borrow tools, and check in on one another.

These everyday connections build trust long before an emergency occurs. They also make it easier to identify neighbors who may need extra assistance and to communicate quickly when conditions change.

This neighborhood demonstrates that preparedness doesn't have to begin with a formal meeting or a complicated plan. It can start with neighbors exchanging contact information, staying informed, and looking out for one another.

Prepared neighborhoods begin with connected neighbors. A few simple steps today can create a stronger, safer, and more resilient community for everyone.

Ensuring Residents Get Critical Alerts

LeydenReady volunteers canvassed neighborhoods throughout Leyden Rock and Leyden Ranch to increase participation in LookoutAlert, Jeffcom's official regional emergency notification system.

During the outreach, nearly 500 LookoutAlert information cards were distributed door-to-door, and volunteers explained how Lookout Alert provides essential communication before and during an emergency.

Jeffcom confirmed that this effort resulted in a significant increase in LookoutAlert registrations, helping more households receive timely emergency information when it matters most.

This success demonstrates how a small group of dedicated volunteers can make a meaningful difference. By taking the time to reach out to neighbors, they helped strengthen the safety and preparedness of the entire community.
